Under Milk
Wood - Sound
Collage.
At the beginning of
the year, I worked with <Front Row Theater>, for their production
of Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood. During this time I
gathered and edited various sound samples, made arrangements of folk
tunes and gathered a group of children to sing. Along with the
40minutes worth of sound cues I created, I managed to fit in two
compositions. Both electric acoustic in nature. These were:
Mirage
Based around piano,
sounds were manipulated and transformed with the use
of Cubase and Reason. 5min
Whisperings
A welsh inspired folk like harp
composition.
Improvised on piano and transformed
into harp through Reason and Cubase. 4min

Intangible Illusions
7min 17sec
Intangible Illusions
is an electric acoustic work I wrote for the composers’ concert on June 2nd at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music,
Southbank.
Again I used
Reason and Cubase and improvised through Sibelius for the piano tracks
you hear. I doubled the melody at a 7th
and played with sound samples and rhythmic beats to give an over all
ambient percussive groove.
I wanted the
sound scape to morph, introducing either new sounds, or a different
variation of patterns creating an ‘intangible illusion’. I think
in the end I made a reasonable successful result of my aim.
The Old
Magic
is a chamber composition based upon the poem titled
The Old Magic by Edith Nesbit
(b.1858-1924). The poem is one of many works in one of her published
literary collections entitled Many Voices. Written for
Soprano, Piano, Violin and Cello, the composition tries to convey
the imagery of the gray sea and the turbulence of the current
time represented in the poem, contrasting with the calmer
memories of a past from long ago.
This composition is currently
a work in progress but will be approx 10minutes in length when complete.
2004
Redlands
A three movement orchestral work, commissioned by the
Cleveland Symphony Orchestra Inc. This composition took a
process of a year to complete working with the community orchestra and
lecturer to create the finished product. It was performed in August at
their annual 'Strawberries and Champagne' concert. Click <here>

The composition was showcased at a concert at QCGU in tribute to
Peter Sculthorpe, the composer himself attended the performance.
